World Bicycle Relief raises $1.6 million during the 2008 Annual Appeal

Stalelife creates an integrated approach to spread the word

World Bicycle Relief (WBR) provides sustainable transportation to the people who need it most. With a bike, people can travel farther, carry more and cut their travel time considerably.

The WBR Annual Appeal campaign had two goals:

  1. Raise $1.2 million dollars for bicycles to Africa
  2. Build awareness and increase followers/advocates

Direct Response for Social Good followed a timely approach
First we increased the amount of people on the email list with a friend-ask-a-friend approach. Then we sent 2,271 DM packages and deployed 3,000 emails (a few times, actually). All respondents were lead to a custom splash page and DM recipients could respond via BRE.

Next we added a social marketing micro-donation campaign. Twitter accounts were started for WBR and DOUBLEbikeMATCH, and we used them to push potential donors to a splash page. Word spread quickly and we raised an additional $5,000 through referral, blog conversations and recommendations.

The results surpassed goals by 25%
The plan was to raise $1.2 million, and through our efforts we were able to raise 25% more - $1.6 million total. That’s almost 12,000 bikes, which will have a positive affect on over 240,000 people in Zambia.

From the previous year’s efforts, we almost doubled donations (overall and whole bike) and we increased the average gift size. Plus newsletter subscriptions doubled from 1,497 to 3,313.
